Shared Futures

A path to peace through interfaith cooperation

In an era where global peace and social cohesion are increasingly under threat, innovative approaches are essential to address the root causes of conflict and marginalization. Kerk in Actie's ‘Shared Futures’ program exemplifies such innovation by fostering interfaith cooperation through dialogue and entrepreneurship among marginalized youth in fragile contexts. The program reduces tensions, creates job opportunities and strengthens local economies in Kenya, Pakistan, Egypt, Cameroon and Ghana and will soon expand to other countries.

Interfaith socio-economic cooperation for peace

Shared Futures combines interfaith dialogue with socio-economic collaboration to build resilient communities. Youth from diverse faith backgrounds are trained and supported to enhance their employment prospects, thereby fostering social cohesion within their communities. This holistic approach not only alleviates economic hardships but also bridges religious divides, cultivating mutual understanding and cooperation.

Targeting root causes of conflict

Shared Futures is addressing the structural causes of conflict,  such as exclusion and scarcity, unequal power balances, and cultural norms that perpetuate discrimination. By implementing interventions that build (or strenghten existing) new systems and relationships, the program seeks to transform conflicts at their roots, promoting lasting peace and stability.

Youth-centric approach

Recognizing the pivotal role of youth in societal transformation, Shared Futures places young people at the heart of its strategy. By engaging youth from different faith groups, the program enhances their employment prospects and empowers them to become agents of change in their communities. This approach not only addresses immediate economic needs, but also fosters long-term social cohesion and resilience.

A holistic approach

The program also has an emphasis on gender equality and inclusion. By equipping participants, particularly marginalized women and youth, with entrepreneurial skills, Shared Futures strengthens economic resilience and social stability. Engaging religious and community leaders further builds trust and unity, essential components for sustainable development.

Proven impact and scalability

Shared Futures is now operating in 5 countries: Kenya, Pakistan, Egypt, Cameroon and Ghana. The results are compelling. Since the start in 2018 up to 2024 there are:

  • 16.350 participants (numbers will be updated twice a year)
  • 1.997 businesses started
  • 1.452 participants with increased incomes
  • 1.510 internships completed.

The program's effectiveness show a potential for broader application. With her partners Kerk in Actie is exploring the possibilities to expand to Bangladesh, the Middle East and the Netherlands.
